Green Screen Studio: What Is It?

by Trevor Weir

Green screen studio technology is a method that is used in filming and photography. Filmmakers and photographers use this to create visual effects that enhance the picture or create imagery that is completely new. This type of technology is also known as chroma key technology.

This use of technology initially started off using a blue screen in the background and now the standard format is to use green. The colours chosen is based how contrasting it is to the tones in the human skin. Over time, green just proved to be the more effective option in creating enhanced visuals especially when the filming is done outdoors.

The first cases of the use of green screen studio were in television. Weather reports used the method to project the weather forecaster on a map with images that can change in the background. Filmmakers were impressed by this and decided to utilise it in filming and photography.

The post-production work that went into filmmaking is a long a tedious process to create special visual effects. Chroma key technology offered a great way to cut out a lot of the work and create a better result by having a computer do most of the imaging. The method that was in use previous to this is called the 'travelling matte' method. RKO Radio Pictures pioneered both of these methods.

A lot of the improvement that we see in modern films is a result of the massive technological advances that have been made. Very high quality images are made just by the use of professional cameras. Nowadays, some films are made using completely computer-generated images.

A lot of films nowadays heavily use green screen studio to create scenes. The process allows actors to remain in the studio and be shown with any background some that are all CGI. The method also allows actors that are not in the scene together to appear as of they are in the same place at the same time.
